The Protector series harkens back to an era that is pretty gone now: Newgrounds, Armor Games, Kongregate, the Flash game revolution. Protector IV is probably one of the biggest, deepest games to come from that platform.
It's a tower defense game with RPG elements mixed in. You field commanders who come with two unit types each. Each mission you finish gives your commanders experience and levels. Each commander also specializes in an element, and foes strong, weak, and immune to those.
If I have any criticism it's that the game litters flying foes into every mission, making melee units almost useless.
The main plot on its own is about 10-12 hours, which is ridiculous for a Flash game. Full completion is much more. Of course, there's also four Protector games if you want even more.
The dev re-released all their games on Steam so they can be experienced again easily.
